I have some pictures taken on a digital camera that I want to keep but are
each over 1,000 kb in size.

They look good but they don't look "THAT" good.

Is there a way of reducing the file size of JPG images?

From "A Nation Deceived" (www.nationdeceived.org): "Acceleration is a gift
of time. For the child, skipping one year means one-twelfth of his or her
time in school has not been wasted. If a child skips two years, that's a full
one-sixth of his or her educational career that is spent learning rather
than marking time."

Look at IRFANVIEW

http://www.irfanview.com/

it allows batch file conversion.

Download and install one of the Windows XP PowerToys called:

Image Resizer

This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.

Here's the link:

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

Recommend that you try Microsoft Power Toys for Windows XP and download and
install Image Resizer. Very simple and easy to use. Also the reply from
Steve pertaining to IrfanView is a great recommendation. I have both
IrfanView and Image Resizer installed.

Hi King:

I am certainly no photographer and I am not up on the technology. But I
sometimes take upwards of 200 pics per week for my business which I quite
often email to clients, so size-on-disk is important to me. It has been my
experience that

.... my experience that some cameras produce vastly different qualities and
file sizes. I have no idea why this is so. It does NOT seem to be based on
megapixel values. I have several cameras-- all rated 3.2 mp but I end up
using the lower-end Kodak 330 series more thatn the higher end cameras
because it produces a smaller picture file. Of course this is not an XT
issue but I would appreciate an explanatin from someone who knows.

Just keep in mind that if you a software package that allows you to compress
the JPG file to a smaller size JPG file, that each time you save the file
some additional detail. This will make the picture's image quality look even
worse.

And if you ever want to print up those reduced file sized pictures in
the future, the quality will be horrible.

I'd suggest starting to archive your photos at their full resolution on
DVD, and then using one of the software solutions already given to you
in this thread to compress the images for daily use on your computer.
