Hi Folks

Here is the situation: I have 1+yr old HP laptop vt6200 with XP Pro. I ran into a sticky issue when I installed ADS Tech Instant DVD 2.0 software to convert my old video cassettes into digital format. I simply installed the software and that included DirectX. My laptop before this was quite stable fully loaded work/office PC

Symtom: The Windows XP boots with the logo in the middle and seem to boot XP, but hangs with blank screen probably before showing the desktop screen as I see the LCD screen illuminated but blank. It sits there forever

Here is what I tried
I tried to use all safe modes, but the same symptom, except I see all the safe drivers being used and listed on the display
I tried to use the "Last known good.." but the symptom there is the sam as when I choose to boot normally
I used the recovery CD that came with the Hp laptop. unfortunately, it does not give me repar option but to reinstall XP pro to factory settings. i talked to HP support, but did not get any satisfactory response. :

Can you help provide tips to resolve this
- I prefer not to loose the data and apps installed on the lapto
- Is there any way to copy the data from the hard disk to another computer by a bootable lite XP that can let me do that. Like recovery XP bootable CD that I can possibly create

PLEASE HELP!!

I don't know what it is that causes users to cross-post Windows questions to
Windows NGs (where they are on-topic) and to microsoft.public.word.newusers
(where they are decidedly *not*), but I will point out again that
microsoft.public.word.newusers is a newsgroup for new users of Microsoft
*Word*!

Ok. I may be out of line here, being a non-veteran of Windows XP,
however, I thought that if you re-installed Windows XP, all of your
programs and data would remain. When you say "recovery disk", you do
mean a Windows XP disk that came with your computer, right?

Only if you re-format the hard drive (Then re-install Windows XP)
would you lose your data.

Wouldn't a Windows re-install be worth a shot? (re-installing but not
re-formatting).

You are saying you can see stuff in safe mode, right? (pressing F8
repeatedly while your computer boots up is supposed to load a standard
VGA screen).

I must be missing something else... How could HP support overlook
such an easy solution (or attempt at a solution anyway). Or am I
wrong when I say a Windows re-install without a re-format will not
lose any data..?

start / programs / accessories / system tools / files and
settings transfer wizard should do the trick. Or backup
data / registry and restore after.

Providing you have kept Windows XP up to date, you can use System Recovery
to Restore the system to a Checkpoint prior to installing the software that
messed it up. Works a charm. Search in Windows Help for details.
