How do I "rearchive" archive folders in Outlook?

I am taking over a work e-mail account that has a history of e-mails dating
back five years. They are collected in a variety of archive folders that vary
in the length of time and size. I wish to "rearchive" the e-mails into tidier
groups.

For example, one archive I have is for January through March of 2003.
I wish to make three new archive folders, January 2003, February 2003, and
March 2003.

I have tried opening the three month archive and then doing an archive and
selecting the three month archive folder as the one to "rearchive". Outlook
does generate the folder structure again in the new archive folder, but it
does not populate those folders with the e-mails I want to separate.

One option I want to avoid is moving the e-mails in the three month archive
file into my active e-mails and then doing the archive on a by month basis. I
have MANY files to do like this.

Any suggestions?

Many Thanks,

If those emails were just recently moved into the archive, the archive
function archives by "date modified" and not "date received". So that may be
your problem...
So - make sure that the date you have selected to "archive emails older
than" is set to today and it should move all of them. Also, double check that
you're not trying to archive the folder into the same pst file.
If it still doesnt work, check your deleted items folder and see if it
dropped some type of error log in there. That may give some clues as to why
it isn't working.

Thank you for the response, the modified date is a key I think I missed.
However, referring back to my three month archive situation, is there a way
to pull just the January 2003 emails from that larger archive and create a
single month archive? It sounds like your answer of moving anything older
than today's date will just move all three months of e-mails to the new
archive folder.

You can certainly create a new PST, open the archive PST, select the folder
containing the messages, filter the view to only show the messages you want,
then copy those to the PST where they are to be kept.

Brian,
I can go that route, but the archive file I am dealing with contains dozens
of folders and thousands of e-mails. And that is just the 3 month archive
folder.
Still, it's a solution and I may start chipping away at the job this way.
Thanks,
Travis
