How do I re-order references in an index?

I have an author index: {INDEX \e " " \h "-A-" f "a" \c 2 \k":" }
that refers to particular items (not page numbers) by that author.

In the index, the items appear in the following order:
Watts, Isaac 1674-1748 490, 464, 463, 330, 287, 209, 298, 202, 138, 84, 54,
31, 3, 2

Is there any way of re-ordering this so that the referenced items appear in
increasing order?

I'm using Word 2003

Thanks

I guess you created the entries by adding \t switches to the XE
fields? If so, I can confirm your observation. Text seems to be listed
in random order. I don't know of a workaround, unfortunately.
