How do I preview attachments without opening message

I have my email set to view messages. Last week, I could see the paperclip
indicating that there was an attachment to open. Now when I click on the
message,(prior to opening it) sometimes I can't view the message or it takes
it several minutes to show the message and attachment. It just started doing
this. Any idea's why it is taking so long now to view the message? TIA
