How do I open an encoded document?

My file is in .doc format, and it was created in either MS Word 98/2000, I
can't remember which. It was created quite some time ago, and now, when I
want to open the document, a window (File Conversion) opens and asks me to
select an encoding option from a list. No matter what encoding option I
select, it doesn't become readable. There's all these weird squares and other
characters/symbols. I have tried opening the file under 'recover text from
any file', and the other options under 'files of type' in the open file
dialog box, but to no avail. I even upgraded to Office XP, but it's still the
same. Please help!

There is no essential difference between the file formats of any of the Word
versions you have mentioned. It seems the document is corrupt. Did you
perhaps try to open it from a floppy disc? That would corrupt it.

Well, I created and saved it on my desktop pc. And when I tried opening it
again after a couple weeks (could be months), this is what I encountered. I
even tried saving and opening it it other PCs. If it is corrupted, why? What
happened that could have corrupted it? Or is it something to do with
encryption? Could I have accidentally pressed some keys and done something to
it? That's what plaguing me.
