How do I make the x-axis just read years eg 2004

Im trying to create a chart on excel which shows increase in share dividends
each year. I've created a smooth line custom chart. I wanted the x axis to
start, where it crosses the y axis, at 1996 and end at 2003. All the
information is in the chart but the x axis always goes wrong when i try to
alter it to read these years. Sometimes it reads Jan-00 all the way along.
Other times it reads Jan to May 1900 for some reason. Please help me to make
the x axis read 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003.
