How do I make sure windows does not go into hibernate (or fix thehibernate bug)?

I didn't mean how long *before* you get a 'freeze'. I meant how long do
you wait *after* it 'freezes'. I.E how long before you decide it isn't
coming back and 'give up'.

Good idea.

Sleep is one of the best 'debug tools' ;)

It appears that ZoneAlarm was causing some of the problems. After
installing it and leaving it over night, the computer no longer tries to
go to that pseudo-standby mode and turn the monitor off against the
power instructions that I set. I left it running all night, logged off,
and could log back in. I'll try using some programs for a few hours, log
off for a few hours, and then see if it still functions okay. If there's
a bug in ZoneAlarm, I'll have to explore options like Sygate (I like to
be fluent with at least the most basic firewall configurations in
windows, even though on my home network it's not as necessary with my
hardware firewall).

Cheers,

Ari

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

Hmmm...I thought Sygate was another 'free for home use' firewall, but
apparently I was mistaken...

Free home version is available here:
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

just click on download button.

Highly recommended, I swapped over from ZA some months ago. It's secure
'out of the box' but also customisable if the fancy takes you.

Smaller footprint and far less buggy.

Well, that sounds like good progress then.

Left it on all night, it did not freeze, and I've installed sygate
personal firewall. ZA was the problem.

Interesting. ZA must have been blocking something it shouldn't have.

Even when it was turned off (I think I turned it off and left it one
night before uninstalling it) it caused a freeze. Even if I didn't, I
made sure that all routers were in the safe list, the entire home subnet
was in the safe list, each dns was in the safe list, and each computer
on the network had its static ip in the safe list. I'm not really sure
what else I could have easilly done. I have far fewer safe list items
with Sygate and so far, no issues like the ones I've been struggling with.
