i have used a formula that takes the first and last names or peoples names
and combines them together with a comma. I want the last name to be bold and
the first name to be normal. how do i do this?

You'll need to keep the last name in a separate cell, as text, and bold those
cells. You can't bold a portion of a formula, or its results

i have got the last and first names in separate cells. But then im supposed
to combine them in a formula, except the last name has to be bold and the
first name normal...?

Excel WILL NOT allow you to apply different formatting to compnents of a
formula. If you must have everything in the a single cell, then 1) use the
formula to get the value you want, 2) copy the formulas then use Edit>Paste
Special values to convert them to values, not formulas, and 3) manually
format the last names as bold

Not if you want to keep it a formula.

If you don't want the formula anymore, you can use Duke's technique.
