How do I know if....

I currently have an HP machine that had XP Pro originally on it but was Vista
Compatible. When Vista came out, HP sent me an HP Express Upgrade to Premium
Disk. I installed it ok.
Now I want to upgrade to Ultimate which HP said is fine. But I don't have
the Anytime Upgrade DVD from MS. I purchased the upgrade key through the
online Anytime upgrade function and am at a hold state till the dvd gets
here. But who knows how long that will take.
Question: Is there anyway of knowing that when HP's Express disk upgraded me
to Vista Prem if it also included the files for Ultimate? Can or should I try
doing the install without the DVD? I don't want to render my puter useless in
case it definitely needs the DVD and I end up with nada.
Or is there some some files on my system that tells me if Ultimate is on the
system and can be upgraded or is there a little program that will tell me
this?
I asked HP (they are dense) if the Express disk had Ultimate on there and
they said no even though while exploring the disk, I saw references to
Ultimate.

Any advice would be appreciated. It's a boring, crappy, rainy day here and
it would be a good day for me to do this if possible. ;-)

Well, probably its just marketing/advertising images with Ultimate in the
name. The AnyTime Upgrade link in Control Panel has graphics containing the
word Ultimate, Home Premium, so if HP says no, I would just believe them and
wait until the product with upgrade software arrives.

Thanks Andre..
Carey - I've read all that and it doesn't really answer my question.

If I try an install without the dvd and it asks for it, what happens? I have
purchased the key but have not downloaded it yet because I don't want to
start any process without the disk in case it renders my system useless and I
can't work. So what do I stand to gain or lose by trying it without the disk?

Trying to install without it means you would be reinstalling the same
operating system, the thing is the key would not be accepted in the first
place, since its meant for Home Premium. You could give it a try though, but
don't enter a key if the option is presented, if a list of editions of Vista
are shown select the one you have the right key for then continue upgrading.

I still suggest you wait though.

Hey John, stop annoying people here!

You have been given the right advice, now HEED it!

The problem is, sadly, that the OEM may select to provide whatever they want
(or conversely, don't want) when they provide you with media. If you had a
retail Vista DVD the answer would be "Yes, of course you can do the upgrade
with what you have! Go for it and enjoy!"

But since we don't know what HP provides in the way of media, and since
there's apparently no way to find out from HP given that you've tried and
failed, then there's just no way to know. Only HP can tell you what media
they sent you.
