How do I keep Word from double spacing when I do an envelope

I have been trying to change this for months. I can, in word in a document
when I finish, click on the heading at the top that says single spacing and
correct the double spacing in a letter (why that is a default I do not know,
not to mention how to change that default either), but when I do an envelope,
it double spaces the address and I can not find out to change that no matter
what I do, Please help

You're seeing double spacing in both places because the Normal style
in the Normal.dot template has become defined with double spacing.
(Yes, there are too many different things in Word that are named
"Normal". Sorry, that's the way it is.)

These instructions are for Word 2002 or 2003, since you didn't say
what version you have. If it's an earlier or later version, the
directions are slightly different.

In any document, click Format > Styles and Formatting. In the task
pane, click the down arrow next to the Normal style entry and select
Modify.

In the Modify dialog, check the box for "Add to template". Then click
the Format button and choose Paragraph. In the next dialog, change the
Line Spacing dropdown to Single. Click OK in both dialogs.

That _should_ also fix the line spacing on envelopes, because the
Envelope Address style used there is "based on" the Normal style. If
it doesn't fix it, then select the Envelope Address style in the task
pane and repeat the process of setting Single spacing. Don't forget to
check the "Add to template" box.
