How do I keep the formatting (borders, etc) when inserting a file.

When I insert a (one page) file with a full page border and a footer I lose
the border and footer after I insert it into the document. Also, the wording
in the file extends beyond the print area, so is cut off when printing. How
can I keep the border & footer and other formatting when inserting a file?
