How do I install XP on a 160GB IDE drive

A

Angus Comber

Hello

I am having difficulty installing XP on a 160GB IDE hard drive. I see the
disk in the BIOS and the install sees the disk - although it seems to
strangely report it as two 80GB drives. I can create a partition but when I
select to Install it does work.

Any ideas?

Try booting to xp cd,recovery,at cmd screen type:DiskPart In DiskPart,
delete a partition,or both,create partition,then press Esc key,then type:
FORMAT C: /FS:ntfs When its thru type:EXIT Let xp restart, reboot to xp cd,
this time select install xp.Leaving part of the hd raw instead of creating
two
partitions would be my suggestion, then in xp,go to run, type:diskmgmt.msc
In msc,R.click on the unallocated space(raw),create a partition,then format,
when its thru,L.click on it,actions, all, select, make active...

Assuming, of course, he's trying to install XP w/SP2 because XP or XPw/SP1
will have problems with drives larger than 137Gb.

XPw/SP1 has 48-bit LBA incorporated into it and has no trouble with the
large drives. Only XP "gold" has this issue.

Hi Angus,

Did you want two 80GB partitions? If not, at the point of setup where it
asks for the installation partition, just delete them and create a new one
from the free space. Then format and proceed with installation. Be aware
that:

- you must be installing with a version of XP that is integrated with SP1 or
SP2
- your system BIOS must support 48-bit LBA
- you should disable any BIOS level antivirus detection schemes during setup
- XP setup generally does not like drive manufacturer setup utilities. If
you are using one, try not using it and rather leave the drive blank while
booting with the XP CD. Allow it to do the partitioning and formatting work
instead.
