How do I insert a line above my footer on each page of document?

Select the footer. Insert your line. Set the bottom margin of the page to
allow enough room for it.

Switch to normal view and then click on View and Footnotes and use the spin
arrow to select footnote separator. I hope this is helpful to you.

No one has asked yet, so what is a "spin arrow"?

Sorry - I guess that's just my own language. Spin arrow refers to the down
arrow where you can select something else.

Barbara asked for a FOOTER separator, not a FOOTNOTE separator. (Although,
she might've used the wrong term by accident.)

Barbara, I usually select the first line of my footer and just click the
"Top Border" button on the formatting toolbar. If you don't like the amount
of white space between the line and the footer text, go into Format > Borders
and Shading. Click on the Borders tab and click on the Options button at the
lower right corner of the dialog box. You also can select different line
styles/colors in this dialog box.

To increase the space ABOVE the border line, click on the first line of
footer text and use Format > Paragraph and increase the space before the
paragraph.

Hope this helps.

Apply a top border to your footer using Format | Borders and Shading. You
can use the Border Options to change the distance between the text and the
border.
