How do I insert a glossary

Other than using bookmarking or hyperlinks is there any way I can insert a
glossary in a long document so that I simply hover over a word and read its
definition.

What you are trying to do is actually an "on mouse over" script that Word
doesn't support.

You can accomplish your task using Frontpage and simple scripts, if you plan
to output your product to the web.
