How do I go "online" ?

I've just installed Outlook 2003 and I'm completely new to
Outlook.

I have an IMAP account. For whatever reason, Outlook
displays "offline" in the bottom right corner and I can't
move email between folders when "offline". I know my
connection to the server is OK because I can get mail by
clicking on send/receive. Also, I have Outlook Express on
this computer and that works fine with the IMAP server.

I searched help trying to find out how to go "online".
Apparently there should be an "Work Offline" switch in the
File menu but it isn't there. Any ideas?

Do you see "work offline" with a checkmark next to it? If so, select it.
You may not see it if you haven't used it. If there are a
couple of chevrons at the bottom of the File drop down
menu, click on the chevrons to show all options, thereby
exposing Work Online...

I am the original poster, posting through a different news server.

This is very frustrating for me. I know there is supposed to be an
option in the file menu to "work offline" which I should uncheck.
However, it isn't there. I stated this in my original email.

Here are my file menu options...

New >
Open >
Close All Items
Save As ...
Save Attachements >
Folder >
Data File Management ...
Import and Export ...
Archive ...
Page Setup >
Print Preview
Print ...
Properties
Exit

There are no other options or chevrons in this menu.

This is Outlook 2003 w/SP1 installed on a laptop running Win2K. I
have setup one Exchange Server account and one IMAP account.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Problem resolved...

If anyone is following this thread, I have Outlook installed on two
computers, both using the same Microsoft Exchange server such that
both computers can access the same email account. Outlook works fine
on one computer. On the other computer, there is no way to make
Outlook go "online".

Having no useful ideas on how to get Outlook to go online, and still
having the same problem for several days, I have decided to try out
the mail program Thunderbird from Mozilla. It installed without a
hitch on both computers and seems to meet all of my requirements. In
addition, it seems to be less burden on the computer (i.e. it starts
up quicker and runs smoother). I'm now preparing to install it on my
other Windows machines.

I'll add here that my problem with Outlook is not due to stupidity on
my part. I have lots of experience with several email programs and
run my own email servers on various computers. And I have nothing
against Microsoft - I own and use several Microsoft programs and have
made a reasonable amount of money investing in Microsoft. I'm just
frustrated that there is nobody who can figure out how to go online.
