How do I get rid of reminders without opening the item?

At this point I have 46 reminders, and many of them are for tasks that were
completed long ago (but just not marked completed since I don't often keep up
to date with deleting or showing that I have completed a task or a calendar
item). Do you have any suggestions on how to get rid of reminders that I no
longer want without having to delete them?

When they pop-up in the Reminders dialog select them and press Dismiss.
