How do I get rid of a "q "to right of curser in my words document

For some unknown reason when, I open a new words document, there is a “q†to
the right of curser.
My old words documents have also been affected
Please advise how I can get rid of this annoyance.

In Word 2003 or earlier, click on Tools | Options | View tab | uncheck
the "All" and "Paragraph marks" boxes | OK. See
