How do I get Outlook 2003 to close messages on reply?

Outlook 2003 has stopped closing the original message when I reply to it, and
I'd like it to resume doing this, because otherwise I end up with a ton of
messages I've finished with still open (and these are not just messages with
attachments I've opened). I'm sure this is a very simple setting somewhere,
but I can't for the life of me find it manually, or in the Outlook help, or
by searchin the online knowledge base.

Tools>Options>E-mail Options. Check the box labeled "Close original message
on reply or forward".
