How do I get a Recent Docs menu in the start menu?

I have been trying to figure out how to display the Recent Documents in the
Start Menu.

I don't have the option in Right-Click Start > Properties > Customize >
Advanced > Start Menu Items

I searched the knowledge base for the start menu policies and found how to
make DWORD values to add it to the registry. But in there I already have a
REG_Binary value.

---From knoledgebase--- clipped
Policy:Remove Recent Documents item from Start Menu
Description:Removes the Recent Documents folder from the Start menu. Also
removes the corresponding checkbox from the Start menu customization CPL.
Registry Value:"NoRecentDocsMenu"

Policy:Maximum number of recent documents
Description:Specifies the number of shortcuts displayed on the Recent
Documents submenu.
Registry Value:"MaxRecentDocs"
--------------

I deleted the "NoRecentDocsMenu" binary (which had a value of 01 00 00 00)
reboot, nothing.
I put it back, changed 01 to 00, reboot, nothing.
I deleted it, put a DWORD "NoRecentDocsMenu", gave it a value of 0 (for
disabled), reboot, nothing.
Gave it a valus of 1, reboot, nothing.
Deleted it completely, reboot, nothing.
I restored it.

I can't figure out how to put it in and I also would like to set a max
recent docs so it doesn't fill the screen when the menu shows. 20 should do.

What do I have to do to the registry to do this?

Maybe I misunderstand you but;
How about the tick-box at the bottom (below the 'Start Menu Items');
'[ ] List my most recently opened documents'

Nottie: Nope it's not there.
Phillip Ashley: I don't use the classic view, I like it, but I like XP look
better.
Patrick: Nope it's not there, the last thing on that list is the System
Administration display options.
Thanks for trying though any other suggestions?

I'm a little confused, so forgive me. Do you have "Documents" in your
start folder/list? If you click that do you see " My Documents" and
"My Pictures?" If so, as someone else pointed out already, kelley has a
nice registry script that adds switches to turn the recent documents
feature on and off. I used to run a program to keep it cleared. Her script
makes it much nicer. The additions will be added to your task bar and
start menu customize options.

My Network Places

Administrative Tools

I would like My Recent Docs somewhere inbetween My Documents and My Infernal
Contraption. The reg file philip ashley provided above (for kelly's reg
file) did not add any Recent Documents to the Start Menu, nor did it add the
option to enable it in the Start Menu properties. The option is there for
the classic view, however even when I enable that, it doesn't show. Seems
like Microsoft just doesn't want me to have easy access to my most recent
docs.

With kellys' reg file is there something I have to do to enable it?

Okay. I sometimes forget about the two different views. I set mine to classic
long ago. I believe the script I was referring to only applies to the classic
view, which never had an option for enabling/disabling recent docs, whereas
there is a little more control in the new xp style menu. So, there may be a script
to fix your problem, but the one to which I was referring prolly isn't it.
If I find anything that might help, I'll post.

As far as Kelly's reg files go, it depends. Many of them (I think) you will
enable/disable in the registry by changing the value, and it will stay that
way until you go in and reset that value to something else, e.g. 0,1,2..etc.
But, some of her stuff is just an outright fix of some problem and you don't
have to do anything other than import the reg keys.

She has some nice fixes, but sometimes it's not always clear to the less
experienced (like me) just what the fix fixes or which fix to use, especially
if there's more than one that looks like it applies to the problemo.
