I am currently involved in a graduate level Statistics course. Developing
information including the mean or standard deviation, and vauance requires
the "Summation Sign" which looks like a crazy looking "E". I am also looking
to see if word can do the Greek letter mu, or the Greek symbol for sigma.
The Symbol font contains the entire Greek alphabet, both upper and
lower case, mapped to the corresponding English letters.
Other fonts, notably Arial Unicode, Times New Roman, and Lucida Sans
Unicode, also contain full Greek alphabets but in other character
positions. The Insert > Symbol dialog helps with these. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm for more.
The Equation Editor is useful for more complicated mathematical
expressions. It isn't installed by default, so you may or may not find
it listed in the Insert > Object dialog. If you need to install it, go
to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, choose Change, Add
features, Custom installation, find Equation Editor under Office
Tools, and set it to "Run from my computer". Then click Update Now.
You may be prompted for the original Office CD.
