How do I enter a check in the checkbox field

I would like to create a check mark box in my word document so that I can
click on it and a check mark will appear. I can insert the checkbox field
from the Forms toolbar but when I click on it it doesn't create a check.
What am I doing wrong?

When you click on the lock icon it will activate the checkbox so it works
like you want.

Alternatively, you can double click on the check box and it will bring up
the properites. Select the default value as checked.
