How Do I Disable MSDTC?

When I try to install Framework 1.1, I get the error "Failure Registering
System.EnterpriseServices.dll". Not only does the install fail, but the
computer ends up in a state of limbo. Most applications work, but if I try
to install or uninstall anything, I'm informed that there is a suspended
installation of the .NET Framework that must be resolved before I can
continue.

I've been trying to solve this problem for a long time. Many other people
have reported the same problem on the newsgroups. Apparently, there is a
solution: Disable MSDTC. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that. Here
are the instructions provided by MJJ on 23 Oct. 2003:

"Here is the solution I found, based on a comment by Microsoft's Hina Masud
on dbforums (http://dbforums.com/arch/175/2002/11/577449). I wish he lurked
here as well! His comment was that 'if you're not using msdtc, you may
uninstall it.' (paraphrased). So I opened up MMC for services, found
Distributed Transaction Coordinator, and changed its Startup Type from
Manual to Disabled. I was then able to install .NET redistributable 1.1.
Now, let's see how long it takes MS to fix msdtc so it does not interfere
like this."

Can anyone please elaborate on MJJ's instructions for me? Specifically, I'd
like to know what MSDTC does. How do I know if I'm using it? What is MMC?
How do I open MMC for services?

Mirosoft Data Transaction Co-ordinator.
I've had the same problem.

Generally, I leave the install running, look in the Task Manager
find msdtc.exe and kill it. The install then completes
