Outlook Express here has a menu item 'Messages' and contains a 'Cancel
Message' function. Only seems to work if used on same computer with same
ip# and not much time has passed.

Hi,

That's because you still have it cached locally. Cancelling is useful only
if done immediately after posting. Otherwise, it will have propagated to
other servers, many of which will not recognize the cancel request. If a
user already has the post archived on his/her local cache, your cancel
command will not remove it. If you wipe the cache and reload, you will not
get the cancelled message - but this still does not mean it has been
completely removed by any other boards that slurp posts from this one (and
there are a lot that do that).

I canceled my message,,,, a few seconds after posting ... did it work ?

Cancel messages don't have to be honored by any Usenet server. It's
unlikely that your cancel works anywhere except the server you posted
too, but, depending on the timing it may have already been sent to the
world.

You can't - the MS news servers won't accept it. It's there til it's purged,
but is likely cached elsewhere for all eternity.

In general, trying to cancel a newsgroup posting is useless. It rarely has
any effect unless it's done almost immediately, and even then, it doesn't
always help.

The reason is that you post your message to the particular news server you
use. But your message is very quickly propagated to the hundreds or
thousands of other news servers all over the world that carry the same
newsgroup. At most, you can cancel the message from your news server, but
you can't have any effect on all the other news servers if your message is
already there. So unless you cancel before any propagation occurs, you
haven't really accomplished anything.

Your newsreader may have that option. And it may work, but chances are
even if it works it may only remove your post from a percentage of the
news serverers, but NOT all of them.
