How do I deactivate XP?

I bought Office XP Standard. Since my friend had troubles
with his Excel, he deleted that program from his PC and
installed it using my Office XP disk. I have since
installed Office XP on my computer, but keep getting
prompted to activate the product (this is only when I open
Excel). I am assuming that my friend activated Excel when
he installed it on his PC. If so, how does he deactivate
it so that I can activate it on mine? If he can't
deactivate it, does that mean my XP will never work for
me, or will only Excel not work? Would I then have to
just buy an Excel disk to reinstall?

Office can not be installed on your and your friends computer.
Your friend needs to completely uninstall all office products that
were installed from your CD.
You can not install some Office components on one computer and other
components on a different computer.

The other option is to buy another copy, hopefully your friend thanked
you.

I can definitely have my buddy uninstall whatever he did
install. That's no problem. But I just want to be sure
that I will then be able to install and activate it myself
on my pc (I paid good money for this!!). With my buddy
uninstalling, will Microsoft know that this was done,
allowing me to 'activate' mine, or is there a number I
need to call?

I appreciate yout help.

Have him uninstall from his computer.
Attempt to activate yours.
If you can not activate on internet, choose the option to activate by
phone.
Call displayed toll free number, done in about 5 minutes.
