How do I completely remove Narrator feature off of Windows XP Pro.SP2?

P

Phillip Pi

Hello,

Due to a crappy office keyboard, its keys like to get stuck and runs
Narrator. Since I don't use this Narrator feature, I would like to
uninstall it. I checked Add/Remove Windows Components, but couldn't find
it. How can I get rid of it? It is already disabled, but it keeps coming
up once in a while because of my stuck keys.

Thank you in advance. :)

Hi Phillip,

Assuming that you have local Administrator rights on your Windows XP
Professional workstation, you might give the following procedure a
try:

1. Press WIN+U to invoke the Utility Manager application.

2. In the Utility Manager window, select Narrator is Running.

3. Deselect the Start automatically when Utility Manager starts check
box.

This procedure should prevent Narrator from starting during each
Windows XP startup. Next we'll launch the Services MMC console and
disable the Utility Manager service:

1. Click Start > Run.

2. Type services.msc in the Open box and then click OK.

3. In the Services MMC console right-click the Utility Manager service
and select Properties from the shortcut menu.

4. In the Properties sheet for the Utility Manager service, set the
startup type to Manual or Disabled. Stop the service. Click OK when
you're done.

From my research there is no obvious way to uninstall either Narrator
specifically or Utility Manager in general.

Hope that helps,
Tim

Done.

I do not see "Utility Manager" service in the list. I also don't see
this on another machine with XP Home SP1 (Dell OEM).

4. In the Properties sheet for the Utility Manager service, set the
startup type to Manual or Disabled. Stop the service. Click OK when
you're done.

Bummer. Thanks.

Your only solution is to spring for a new $10 keyboard. :)

Heh, maybe but I doubt it. I tried another USB keyboard, and same
problems. :(

1. Don't see anything aboutt Narrator in Shared Features in Office 2003
Pro.'s advanced customization list.
2. Don't see "Text Services" in XP's control panel.
3. Do not have ctfmon.exe in showing in XP's Task Manager.
4. Have not tried renaming narrator.exe, but it seems like it won't work
according to a reply.
