How do I change the default Outlook Internet email Properties?

My Outlook appears to be using RTF as the default properties when creating
new Contacts and sending emails.

I am told that the RTF format is being converted to a .dat file, which is
then getting my attachments caught up on our network spam and lost. The IT
guy hasn't figured it out yet!

I can change an indiviual Contact's Outllok properties. This appears to
resolve the problem. How do I change the default in Outlook to choose the
best format for all newly added Contacts? Can I change this setting for all
my existing contacts in one manoeuvre? I am running Outlook 2003 SP2. Please
help!

As far as I can tell, "Let Outlook decide the best sending format" is the
default in Outlook 2003. Have you checked a newly-created contact record to
see if that or "Send using Outlook Rich Text format" is being chosen? If
you fine that the former is actually the default and you want Outlook to
choose a format other than Rich Text, then click Tools>Options>Mail Format
and choose "Plain Text" or "HTML" in the "Compose in this message format"
drop-down.
