How do I change folder access for an administrative user account?

I don't know if knowing the notebook model will help, but I had an HP NX5000.
It no longer turns on and I have subsequently bought a new laptop.
I have bought an external hardrive reader, and I am trying to view files
that were on my old laptop-which had Microsoft Windows XP.
I currently have a Dell, with a Windows Vista system. I have plugged in the
drive and it can read music files on within the shared folder. As on my old
laptop there was only one user (the administrator) it is denying me access to
any of the files or folders. It has on alot of treasured pictures, files and
music that I would like access to. Is there any means of getting beyond
this. There is no means of entering my logon username and password details,
for my old laptop to obtain access it seems. I have read the information on

Can someone please help me out with this, as I would really like to access

Really, you should just need to take ownership, but there is a circumstance,
which requires *both* XP Pro AND having encrypted the files, where you can
only access them via the original, running account (or using imported
certificates on another system or account). If you didn't have XP Pro,
this can't apply.

If you did have XP Pro, and did encrypt the files, you have to boot that
system to get at the files. Do *not* do a repair install to make that
drive run on another system. Making any changes to the account can very
easily render the data permanently inaccessible. If you need to take this
route, get another hard disk, clone the original to it, and work on the
clone. Make no changes to the original. You could find someone else with
an identical system that's still running, and swap in your cloned drive, and
remove encryption.

What exactly is happening after you take ownership? Are the files
encrypted?
