How do I apply outline numbering to Headings in MS Word 2007?

Previous versions of MS Word provided outline numbering as an option for
headings when defining styles. For example:
1. Heading 1 Title for Section 1
1.1 Heading 2 Title for Section 1.1
1.1.1 Heading 3 Title for Section 1.1.1
1.1.2 Heading 3 Title for Section 1.1.2
2. Heading 1 Title for Section 2
2.1 Heading 2 Title for Section 2.2

This does not appear to be an option when modifying the style for Headings
in MS Word 2007.

Thanks for the quick reply, Summer. I had seen that command and it works fine
within the document for a multi-level list. What I don't seem to find is a
way to apply multi-level list formatting to Headings within the Style
function. Maybe I'm missing something -- but even if the style specifies
"Level 2" or "Level 3," when I try to apply a number format the numbering
remains at Level 1.

Your observation is correct: in Word 2007, the Modify Style dialog box only
allows you to apply/modify single-level lists associated with styles.

To associate heading styles with a multi-level list, select one of the
built-in lists or click Define New Multilevel List; you will then see a
dialog box similar to the old Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box
found in Word 97-2003. See also

Still unclear on appliying outline numbering to heading styles in Word 2007

I'm attempting to apply the step-by-step process outlined in http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html to apply outline numbering to my heading styles. Alas, the shauna kelly web page is not specific to Word 2007.
I'd like my headings to sequence thus:
1
1.1
1.1.1
2,
2.1
2.1.1
2.2
2.2.1
My experimentation is less than fruitful. When I attempt to modify the style of the heading 1, multi-level lists are NOT presented as an option.

Is there some other way to approach this task?

Think I've cracked it

Hello Susan,

I was having the same issue. I found to fix it was a combination of Stefans advice, the article from Shauna and trial and error!

If you have your document with examples of heading 1, 2 3 etc. select an instance of a level 1. Using 'multi level list' within the home ribbon select the multilevel list type you want. then within the styles section of the home ribbon, right click on heading 1 and select "update heading 1 to match selection".

Repeat the process for heading 2. the only difference here is before you 'update heading 2 to match selection' if you go back into the 'multi level list' and at the bottom 'change list level' to the appropriate level when you update you should now have:
1. level 1
1.1 level 2

Simply repeat this proces for each level! worked for me! :)
