How do I add to Startup

D

When I look around, I find many instances of "Startmenu" and "Startup".
Which one is the list of programs shown by MSCONFIG?
How do I add a program to this list? MSCONFIG has no add option.
Does everything in there have to be a program, or can it be a Script or
macro?

There are several places which result in an addition to the list of
startups in MSCONFIG, including the individual account's start menu, the
shared start menu, the Windows registry and the classic system
initialization files inherited from Windows 3.x. You shouldn't be
tinkering with the registry or the classic startup files without
DETAILED instructions or a significant amount of experience (since you
had to ask, you probably don't have it).

It's simpler to use the start menu to add your own applications to the
Windows start up.

Right click the application icon and use the "crate shortcut option on
the resulting context menu

To add an application you wish to run for all user accounts right click
on the task bar's start button and select "Explore all users" from the
resulting context menu. A new Windows Explorer window will open with the
"Start Menu" folder for all users highlighted. Expand the "Programs"
folder within the highlighted "Start Menu" folder, then click the
"Startup" folder within the "Programs" folder. Then drag a shortcut to
the desired application to the right pane of the Windows Explorer window.

To add an application you wish to run for an individual user account
right click on the task bar's start button and click the "Explore"
option on the resulting context menu. A Windows Explorer window will
open with the "Start Menu" folder for your individual Windows OS user
account highlighted. Expand the "Programs" and open the "Startup"
folders as you did above and drag the application shortcut to the right
pane.

Well, two problems. When I open the Startup folder, the only thing in it
is one file - desktop.ini - configuration settings.
The other problem is the shortcut that needs to be dragged to the right
pane does not appear in the left pane - everything there is folders.

I should have mentioned that I'm using WinXP, Thunderbird, and Firefox,
if that matters.

Ah - I managed to go the opposite way - dragged right to left, and my
application is in Startup and is activated when I turn the computer on.
Excellent - Thank you.
