How can you tell if an e-mail message has been opened?

Our company is in the process of moving from GroupWise to Outlook 2003
within the Exchange Server environment.

One nice feature of GroupWise was the ability to look at your sent
messages and see if a message has been opened. This applies only to
recipients within the company, but a nice feature nonetheless.

Is there a similar feature available within Exchange Server short of
requesting a read receipt? My understanding is that the receipt has to
be generated and approved by the reader when he/she opens their mail. I
don't think many people will actively send out these receipts.

Again, we are interested primarily in messages sent within the company.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Other than via receipt? No.

You are correct.

Group policies can make receipts mandatory.
