Are you using templates you made, or the default template?
Two things I'd start with are:
-- Delete normal.dot and let Word recreate a new one. Careful if you have
macros etc., stored in it though; leave it in your Recycle Bin when you
delete it, so you can recover any customizations you might have made.
Delete normal.dot, restart, start word; normal dot will be put back in
its virgin state.
-- Next I'd do a Repair Install of Word. That will not mess with any of
your data but will simply recopy important files to the hard drive,
overwriting the ones that are there. Don't recall if you'll have to reapply
SPs or not; probably will.
If it's only certain files, then it's a different story.
