My hard drive went crazy (emachine) I would like to recover my data before
they change out my hard drive again. when I boot up it gives me two choices
bios setting and F10 to boot. I can not access safe mode to backup and I
dont have a bootable cd. I do have another computer with vista to make a
bootable cd if I knew what files to copy. Is there anyway I can save my data
before trying to reinstall or send it back to gateway for another hard drive

Hi,

If the hard drive isn't damaged - and it may be - then remove it from the
machine and slave it into the working one. Copy off data using that
installation, then replace the drive before shipping for repairs.

As suggested try reading the drive from another machine.
Or maybe download Bart pe builder and create a boot cd.
There was i believe also a linux system rescue boot cd which is on this site
http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page
Hope that helps.
Its always a good idea to create a partiton on your hard drive and use that
for all your data, or even better a second hard drive and then backup to an
external drive or media.
Good luck.

If other suggestions fail try this.

Download the ISO file, and make a bootable Live CD from it.
Boot your failed computer from it(it does not use your failed drive), and
copy your Data to a memory stick/flash drive
Change the permissions on the flash drive from Read Only
