How can I join my domain and keep my current user profile?

I just tried to add a new user to my domain and it created
a new user profile so I didn't have my settings. I then
logged in as administrator and copy and pasted all the
folders from my old local user profile to the new domain
profile. After I did this I could see all the files but I
got "access denied" when I tried to view them and I
couldn't install any new programs. Can someone help me
out with the correct way to do this?

Do i need to remove the account from active directory and
then join the domain? Let me know. Thanks,
