I have just installed Outlook after being impressed whilst using it at work.

How can I instantly delete the emails? As it stands, when I delete them,
either by clicking on the big X or right clicking and selecting delete, then
the email has a strikethrough and I have to then purge the deleted emails. I
am then asked if I really want to purge the deleted emails.

I didn't have to do this at work. Is there a setting that I can change?

I am using Outlook 2003.

Thanks.

That's how IMAP work due to synchronization of server- and client-side
folders. Deleting a post merely marks it as eligible for deletion. It
doesn't get deleted from the server until you Purge and then the server-
and client-side folders are synchronized.

Are you using IMAP at work? More likely you are using Exchange. That's
a different protocol than IMAP, and IMAP is different than POP.
Different e-mail protocols behave differently.

Thanks for the answer! Yes, it is IMAP and the one at work obviously was not.

Is there a short cut to purging?

I am currently going to the edit tab and then selecting purge deleted
messages. Is there a way to do it by using the keys?

Thanks againl

I don't do IMAP myself. I'd suggest putting the Purge button in the
toolbar. Then you have easy access to it.

Purge is on the Edit menu. If you use Outlook 2007 you can set it to purge
when you change folders. You can't instantly delete mail - you'll need to
use the Edit, purge menu.
