I have a relatively large number of contacts that I want to upload into

addresses, email contacts etc. Omar

Apply a name to a single range covering all the data in Excel, save as an .xls file, then use File | Import and Export in Outlook.

Yes. As a matter of fact, I finally tried using the Import, then worked my
way to the Comma Seperated Values (Windows) and got 96 items uploaded. I
only got the name and emaill address uploaded so now I need to figure out how
to get the rest of the contact information uploaded. thanks for your
response.

..xls? Do I have to save the Excel file as .xls or should I use Coma
Seperated Values (Windows) or does it make a difference?

You can use either, but if you use an .xls file, you must take care that the named range covers all the data, all the columns and rows.
