How can I get XP on my new PC?

Guest

I bought a computer a couple years ago from an online retailer and it came
with Windows XP Home pre-installed. I have since upgraded my PC (new
motherboard, processor and hard drive) and would like to install XP Home on
the new hard drive. The problem is my computer did not come with a Windows
XP Disc, only the restore disk. The computer rejects the restore disk. Is
the problem with the new motherboard? Or the Processor? Or the Hard Drive?
I have the original hard drive, but I think any restore data that would be on
it is either erased or damaged. Is there anything I can do short of buying a
new copy of XP Home?

buy a new retail or oem CD. About $100 for OEM and $200 for
retail full install.
see www.newegg.com for one of many sources

Gregg;
The problem is most likely the new motherboard.
Some OEMs tie their restore CDs to the motherboard so a motherboard from a
different manufacturer may not work with the restore CD as in your case.

You may be able to use a generic OEM Windows XP CD with your Product Key, it
would also need to be Windows XP Home.
But I am not sure you would be able to activate after the recent changes
with activation.

Otherwise you may need to buy Windows XP or otherwise acquire another OS of
your choice.

Restore disks will not work on changed hardware, you will need to purchase a
retail full or OEM version if you do not have a qualifying Windows CD.

Hi
Thanks for your replies I can find a lot of places on the net that say
how to make boot CDs but I can't work out whether you can have any old file
on the same CD which you can still have access to once DOS has booted up...
this is the problem I have...I can't use the Windows XP repair facility as I
don't have a standard CD just a Toshiba recovery CD that will only restore a
whole installation not individual files ....

Thx Will

You will need to purchase a retail upgrade or full version of XP to do a
repair install. If you have an unused Win98/Me CD, it can be used as
qualifying media for the Home or Pro upgrade. NT4 SP4 or Windows 2000 will
need XP Pro upgrade.
