How can I fade musical backgrounds in and out in Powerpoint?

Is this even possible? I have powerpoint 2003. I am creating a slide show
set to music and I would like to time the slides to the music, and fade one
selection out and another in. I know how to set the background music over
a predetermined number of slides, but there doesn't seem to be any way to
transition the music smoothly.
