How can I add page numbers that I want in the document?

In Word 2007, I have a document with 3 pages. I want to name the pages
6,7,8. When I change the page number on the first page to 6, all of the
pages are 6. How do I make them 6,7,8?

When you "changed" the page number by typing over it, all you did was remove
the {PAGE} field that displays the current page number, and replace it with
fixed text.

First, put back the field. To do that, select the character '6' and delete
it; then press Ctrl+F9 to insert a pair of field markers and type the word
PAGE between them. Press F9 to update the field, which will go back to
saying 1, 2, 3.

Now change the page numbering properly: On the Insert tab of the ribbon,
click the Page Number button and choose Format Page Numbers from the menu.
In the dialog, click in the Start At box and enter 6, then click OK.

To insert page numbers in Word, do the following: On the Insert tab of the
ribbon, click Page Number, and then click Bottom of Page (or Top of Page if
you want your page numbers at the top). Choose the desired format.

To change the starting page number, click the Page Number button again, and
click Format Page Numbers. In the dialog box, click "Start at," and type the
desired starting number. When you are done, click OK to close the Page Number
Format dialog box.
