I have PCs with windows XP SP2 and also windows 2K SP4.
I have also Windows Defender Beta 2.
My PCs are public PCs.
Each time a new user launch Yahoo Messenger 7.5, it re-installs itself in
the startup registry, and then at each reboot of the PCs, Yahoo is launched
in the systray !
How to block Yahoo from puting itself in the startup registry, wehoever may
start using it ?
With Win Defender Beta 2 ? How ?
With something else ? How ?
With a script ? Which one ?
Thanks.

Hello there.

You can turn off Yahoo Messenger by going to Messenger/Preferences, clicking
on the general tab, then unchecking "Automatically start Yahoo Messenger."

Because Yahoo messenger keeps re-adding itself and is not malicious, there
is not too much that Defender can do. Sorry. :(

Hope this helps.

You will also encounter the same problem with AOL messenger and other
software. The problem with preferences is that it will only apply to that
login account under Yahoo Messenger and is further compounded by a user who
elects to remember id and password and signin automatically. I don't know of
any satisfactory solution to the issue.

Ok thanks a lot.
So now I guess that I need to put a script in the startup as weel that will
delete the yahoo entry from the registry at each startup.
Could you help me to write such a script ?
In VB ?
In Java ?
In DOS batch with : "regedit.exe" [commands]... ? (Is it possible to delete
a registry entry from command-line ?)
Could you paste the script here in your reply ?
Oh by the way, the script should wait/pause 30 seconds before deleting the
entry. Why ? Because at the boot sequence, yahoo will re-puts itself in the
registry after 30 seconds only, and not instantly, so the deletion should
occur only after yahoo has done its dirty job!...
Thanks.
