Hot Swap IDE?

B

Bad Bubba

I have a Fellowes removable IDE enclosure and several drive inserts.
Which has become extremely useful for backup and offline storage of less
used files.

However, each time I want to switch drives, I have to shut down the
system.

Without going to USB or Firewire, is there a hot swappable IDE/ATA
enclosure for Windows XP?

Here's one source http://www.amtrade.com/pc/external_storage_lg_pix.htm#1

Note, which one you pick depends on the max ATA speed (and other features
such as hard drive monitor w/LCD readout). All are hot-swappable.

David:
Interesting. Have you personally worked with any of these hot-swappable
mobile racks yourself? I raise the question because I've worked with a large
variety of mobile racks over the past four years, including a number that
were touted as "hot-swappble", but I never found a single one that was truly
thus. In too many cases the supposedly "hot-swappable" racks resulted in
serious data corruption and data loss when used in that fashion. Admittedly,
(to my knowledge) I've never worked with the racks from the site you
referred to. I would be interested in learning of your experience.

No, I haven't used those but, as the saying goes, "I had heard" they work.

I meant it more as an example to the question 'do they exist' than a
specific recommendation. And in that light of "do they exist," here's some
folks selling servers with hot-swap IDE drives:

Just a 'removable tray' isn't necessarily hot swappable as it has to, at
the very least, properly sequence the removal to be so and most 'consumer'
trays don't.

Once I tried to see if my wife was "hot swappable", and I also wound up with
serious data corruption after she smashed me in the head with a large pan.
;-)

Hey, a head crash can cause permanent damage to the storage medium. But I
guess you know that now ;)

I know 3ware do hot swappable IDE cards and they work great under Linux.
Sorry I can't be any help under XP - but it's another name to look into...

Cheers,
