I have Xp and ie6 and have Ad Aware and spybot
Thanks to PA Bear I no longer get3rd party messages and things are fine on
the surface.
Have run across discussions of Hosts files
Question I have does adding a hosts file do anything new for anyone running
spybot etc

if PA Bear sees this---see I can use a spell checker

You might want to check this website:
"Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File"

You may want to disable the Spybot option to scan HOSTS file, SF:

1. Mode > Advanced

2. Tools (main window) > uncheck HOSTS (unchecking an entry hides it)

If you choose this option, you should also:

1. Mode > Advanced

2. IE Tweaks > Lock Hosts file (malware will be unable to write-to HOSTS)

OTOH I prefer to use MVP Mike Burgess' Lock and Unlock REG files:

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
(which Jurren also posted)

In a handy folder on Desktop, I have shortcuts to these two REG files and my
HOSTS file for easy access. When Mike updates his HOSTS file, I Unlock
HOSTS, overwrite my current HOSTS file with Mike's new one, and then Lock
HOSTS.

Hi SF Gordon - In addition to the info on Jim's page that Bear pointed you
to, you may find the following useful:

You should read and print out/save for future reference mskb article Q179365
here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q179365 which will
tell you the order in which things get loaded.

Two additional resources which have useful information relating to startup
issues are:

How to Delay Loading of Specific Services
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;193888

HOWTO: Control Device Driver Load Order

Perhaps this will help.
