Hi,

I am running an application that writes to the hosts file
(C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc). The problem is that the
hosts file seems to be locked in read only mode (perhaps
by another application, i'm not sure). If i change the
file attributes, they change back to read only straight
away. I've ran the application on other machines without
problems.

Any ideas?

Hi John,

Most spyware cleaners do this as a safety measure to lock HOSTS file. For example, Spybot S&D has an option to lock the HOSTS file ["Immunize" tab]. Spot the application which is causing this and disable the appropriate option.

Hi Ramesh,

I have no spyware cleaners running on the machine at all.
Could it be anything else?

John,

Inspect Windows startup and see if a spyware cleaner is present, in case. Or, there might be a batchfile running at startup.
How to manage Windows Startup?

Also see what other applications are running [use Task Manager]
