hosts file

I created hosts file on the server and stored it in shared folder. Then I
created shortcut to it on each workstations.
It works fine for workstation with public IP address (141.x.x.x) and doesn't
work for ones with private IP (172.20.x.x).
Server has two network cards - with public and private network address, so
gateway is not involved.

Any ideas will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Alan.

Why?

Don't know what you mean by "works" as I don't know what you're trying to
accomplish. Hosts files must be local, as far as I know. And why do you have
workstations with public IPs? This is a no-no.
Server has two network cards - with public and private network
address, so gateway is not involved.

What is your goal here? Why not use DNS?

I don't know if this will help, but you asked for any ideas. In Control
Panel/network connections go to advanced/advanced settings and place the lan
network adapter at the top of the list in adapters and bindings if not
already there. You may also want to post in the win2000.dns newsgroup if
that does not help. --- Steve
