Hosts File Issue

Tim Bourne

Hi all,
I am having issues with a hosts file on w2k. I need to
map an ip to a specific domain name for use with a CRM
Application. On a particular w2k machine, I edit the
hosts file correct entries, but when I ping the domain
name, the host is not resolved. A "ping -a" command also
fails to resolve the host name from the IP address.

The machine also has a lmhosts.sam, network, protocol and
services file in the etc directory, but removing these
still has no effect.

Any suggestions? I look forward to hearing your comments

So you have

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx hostname

in your hosts file?

Did you try

nbtstat -R

to reload? Or reboot, which will do the same thing?
Can you ping localhost?

Hi there,
I can ping the localhost. It returns the computer name
as it's suppost to. I ahve also rebooted the machine but
to no avail. It seems as if all host name entries are
ignored by the system.

Have you searched for 'hosts' all over your computer, and run an AV scan?
Dunno if it's relevant, but there are some viruses that do bad things to
hosts files....
