Hosts File Entries

I have SBS 2003 - all OK Resolution all spot on for clients on local lan.

I have clients access the SBS over a VPN link. I don't want them to use the
SBS 2003 for DNS lookup (availability etc etc etc)

There are no DNS servers on the remote subnets (1 or 2 PCs only).

The remote clients use their ISP for DNS and can access the internet OK, but
can't access the SBS 2003 or Active directory - no resolution!!!

What entries do I need in the hosts file. The Sample LMHOSTS file contains
stuff about domains but is this relevant to a 2003 active directory? what is
best practice for a client that has no reliable access to an ADI DNS server?

Your remote clients will absolutely have to use the SBS for DNS when
connected through the VPN. This is not an option.
You can create host entries for the Domain name and the server and client
names, that only works for address records, it won't work SRV records.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your reply.

I only need to be able to logon to the domain and run a script that maps a
couple of drives to shares on the sbs - does the SRV records matter?

Regards,
