I am having troubles setting up a home network. I am using a Linksys router.
Both my computer and laptop connect to the router and run Wndows XP. I ran
the network wizard and tried to get these computers on the same network and
it didn't work. I can get to the internet on the computer, but I was always
able to get on the internet before, but I can't get on the internet with my
laptop. I also can't see the computers on the network. I checked and made
sure that they are on the same workgroup and they are. I think there might be
some things with the IP addresses that might have to be changed, but I am
familiar on how to change these to get them on the same network, here are my
setting for both. Please tell how to change the necessary information, so I
can have a network.

Desktop:
1394 Connection
-Use the following Connection w/ IP: 169.254.21.101 and Subnet:255.255.0.0

Local Area Connection
-Obtain an IP address automatically

IPCONFIG
-IP:192.168.1.100, Subnet:255.255.255.0, and Default Gateway:192.168.1.1

Laptop:
1394 Connection
--Obtain an IP address automatically

Local Area Connection
-Obtain an IP address automatically

IPCONFIG
-Autoconfiguration IP: 169.254.132.139 and Subnet:255.255.0.0

It looks like you have set up the Local Area Connection on both machines
correctly as they are looking for an IP from the router. I'm not sure where
you have gotten the IPCONFIG details from but they seem to show your problem.
Your router's IP address is 192.168.1.1 and your main PC has been assigned an
IP in the same sub net (192.168.1.100).

However your laptop seems to have a complelty diffferent address for it's
IPCONFIG settings. It almost looks as if this is being populated by the 1394
instead of the LAN. I would recomend either specifiying an IP similar to that
of your main PC for the 1394 connection (eg. IP:169.254.21.101) or disabling
the connection.

Hopefully this will cause the IPCONFIG to be populated by the DHCP on the
router via the LAN connection.

I am having somewhat similiar issues. 2 pc's one desktop the other wireless
laptop. Have a Motorola modem/router gateway unit. Both connect to
internet, both in same workgroup on network. Desktop can see laptop on
network, but can not get into it at all. Laptop can't see the dektop from
it's connection.

I have shared and shared....it's some stupid setting somewhere.
Any ideas to check?

The only two things I can think of is because of a third party firewall like
Norton Internet security or becasue you have not installed and set up file
sharing.

If you are using different operating this can complicate things. Windows
2000 seems to require you to log on as one of the user accounts.

File sharing in windows has never been all that great. The best way to
connect is by typing '\\computername' in an explorer window.

Oh, I should also mention that the PC's should be in the same sub net (ie the
first three parts of the ip address are the same). However if you are
allowing the router to hand out ip addresses (DHCP) this should be the case
anyway
