Home Premim Update woes

Okay so I'm having a problem installing updates on my desktop machine: every
single time I try to install several updates from August thru October,
installation goes fine until I have to restart. After the first restart, it
asks me to login. When I do, the screen shoes "Configuring Updates" and it
does this for about ten minutes or so. Then it restarts unexpectedly. I then
have to login again, and once again I am taken to a screen that says
"Configuring updates". This message lasts about two minutes, THEN it takes
me back yet again to the login screen. However, this time when I login, the
screen says "Welcome". A couple of seconds later, I am taken to an all black
screen with a error box in the middle that reads:

An error has occured.
Code: 0xC004E002
Description: The Software Licensing Service reporated that the license store
contains inconsistent data.

Every single time I have tried to update it since August, this has always
happened. I am usually able to fix it after restarting into safemode, then
restarting back into normal mode, but if I do that, the updates that I
installed earlier are now available to download again.

What's going on? Vista has been running like a champ on my desktop since I
got the upgrade on Launch, and my brand new laptop had no problems at all
installing the updates that my desktop can't seem to handle.

Any help would be appreciated!

There is suppose to be a beta out now. I will not install a beta SP period.
I will not install a SP until after the final release and it's been around
for a little while.
