I have three computers connected via etehrnet in my home/offcie LAN - my main
work PC ('work'), a laptop and a third PC used fro mainly social stuff
('private'). Thya re all conneceted to a Netgear modem/router, which is the
ADSL Broadband connection to the internet.
Since setting this up (I used to use Internet Connection sharing befoe being
able to get ADSL for the first time) and getting the router, I have
uninstalled all previous ZoneAlarm fireealls and disabled Windows Firewall
from all three computers, and use the hard wired firewall in the router. I
have never had any Norton, Symantec of McAfee software on any of the PCs
All three computers are visible on each computer as part of the Windows
network (called Home2) and each can access the internet. However, both
'laptop' and 'private' are denied access to shared files on 'work' althoguu
they can access and sue printers attached to 'work'. 'Work' can access
shared files on the other two computers. So the problem is just file-sharing
from 'work' to the other two, which just does not happen.
I have run all the troubleshooters and followed all the steps therein, sent
pings all over the place (which all work) and even uninstalled and then
re-installed the File and Printer Sharing component in Netoirk Connections on
the 'work' computer. I have also searched the registry on 'work' for any
remaining traces of Zone Alarm and manually deleted the one instance I found.
All three computers run Windowx XP Home with SP2 and are regularly updated
via Windows Update.
Any ideas as to how to overcome this?
Thanks a lot in advance for any replies.
Neil,
Please provide the complete and exact message " ... access denied ... ".

And look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

HI again Chuck
Here are the 'printouts' from this computer (the 'work' one), following the
advice on your website. This is the computer that seems to have the problems
on. [Also, because i cannot get to this computer from the other two on the
network, I cannot copy and paste files from Notepad across from the others to
this one and this message.]
You alreday have background on the network set-up and this comnputer
(running Win XP Home with SP2). I believe as fas as I can tell that physical
and logical network connections are all made.
Ipconfig printout is as follows:

Hope some of that helps, it's all basiccally gobbledegook to me, I am afraid!!

So far, we can see that Neil is getting SMBs from the other 2.

Make sure that NetBT is ENABLED on all 3 computers!

Now, your original problem report is " ... the problem is just file-sharing
from 'work' to the other two, which just does not happen."
So run the reports on the other 2, put the files where you can access them from
the third, pull the files across, and post them. Because all that we know so
far is stated above.
Thanks yet again for help, Chuck I shall ensure that NetBOS is enabled on
all 3 computers.
One addiitonal fact came to light over the weekend, and it is this.
From the other two computers, I can File Share IF I map a network drive onto
them form the 'work' computer (say the main C drive).
BUT, if I go through Windows Explorer on the two computers, and keep
clicking the crosses besides My Network Places, thenEntire networ, then
Microsoft Windows Network, then my network name (Home2) and then all three
computers are there so I click on the name of the 'work' computer, that is
when I get the access denied message as described previously.
So the posiiton is that I can both File Share and not File Share at the same
time, depending which route I go down. That is what seeme to be the issue
and what I cannot figure out!!
Does that help to narrow down the source of the problem at all??
By the way, what are SMBs?
And also, did I see that one of the reports suggests that the computer
called 'PersonalSocial' is the master server/browser? If so, that is not how
I want it, I want it to be the 'work' one. So how do I go about changing the
relative status of the computers?
Neil,
Server Message Blocks, or SMBs, are the language that Windows Networking uses.
Their passage is essential to file sharing, to browsing ("seeing" other
computers in Network Neighbourhood), and to name resolution (if not
"Peer-Peer"). SMBs are protocol independent; they can use either IP (directly
hosted, or NetBT), NetBEUI, or IPX/SPX.

All computers have to use the same transport for SMBs though.

The Master Browser selection process ("election") is fascinating. Tweaking it
manually is even more so. Read about the Master Browser in general, to
understand.
