Home-office LAN and file sharing

I have three computers connected via etehrnet in my home/offcie LAN - my main
work PC ('work'), a laptop and a third PC used fro mainly social stuff
('private'). Thya re all conneceted to a Netgear modem/router, which is the
ADSL Broadband connection to the internet.
Since setting this up (I used to use Internet Connection sharing befoe being
able to get ADSL for the first time) and getting the router, I have
uninstalled all previous ZoneAlarm fireealls and disabled Windows Firewall
from all three computers, and use the hard wired firewall in the router. I
have never had any Norton, Symantec of McAfee software on any of the PCs
All three computers are visible on each computer as part of the Windows
network (called Home2) and each can access the internet. However, both
'laptop' and 'private' are denied access to shared files on 'work' althoguu
they can access and sue printers attached to 'work'. 'Work' can access
shared files on the other two computers. So the problem is just file-sharing
from 'work' to the other two, which just does not happen.

I have run all the troubleshooters and followed all the steps therein, sent
pings all over the place (which all work) and even uninstalled and then
re-installed the File and Printer Sharing component in Netoirk Connections on
the 'work' computer. I have also searched the registry on 'work' for any
remaining traces of Zone Alarm and manually deleted the one instance I found.

All three computers run Windowx XP Home with SP2 and are regularly updated
via Windows Update.

Any ideas as to how to overcome this?
Thanks a lot in advance for any replies.

Sounds like permission issue. The link is for Vista. It should apply to XP.

Thanks Robert, but it is not a permissions issue. None of the issues in your
linked article apply and/or have all been tried/checked and found to be
correctly set.
The root drive is shared, as is the sub-folder on that which is the main 'to
be shared' folder.
Also, doing a Net Share command on 'work' shows this drive and sub-folder as
shared.
So the 'work' computer thinks the files are shared, but still I get an
'access is denied' message on the other two computers when trying to access
it.

Any further suggestions?

Neil,

Please provide the complete and exact message " ... access denied ... ".

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/01/look-at-complete-detail-in-error.html

And look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

The exact message is:
"\\Neil [name of the work PC] is not accessible. You might not have access
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the
server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denied."

Will now look at the links you gave and see if they make any sense to me.
By the way, I have just uninstalled and then reinstalled the network
adadpter from the problem compouter ('Work') but that makes no difference
either.

HI again Chuck
Here are the 'printouts' from this computer (the 'work' one), following the
advice on your website. This is the computer that seems to have the problems
on. [Also, because i cannot get to this computer from the other two on the

You alreday have background on the network set-up and this comnputer

Now, your original problem report is " ... the problem is just file-sharing
from 'work' to the other two, which just does not happen."

So run the reports on the other 2, put the files where you can access them from
the third, pull the files across, and post them. Because all that we know so
far is stated above.

Thanks yet again for help, Chuck I shall ensure that NetBOS is enabled on
all 3 computers.

One addiitonal fact came to light over the weekend, and it is this.
From the other two computers, I can File Share IF I map a network drive onto
them form the 'work' computer (say the main C drive).
BUT, if I go through Windows Explorer on the two computers, and keep
clicking the crosses besides My Network Places, thenEntire networ, then
Microsoft Windows Network, then my network name (Home2) and then all three
computers are there so I click on the name of the 'work' computer, that is
when I get the access denied message as described previously.

So the posiiton is that I can both File Share and not File Share at the same
time, depending which route I go down. That is what seeme to be the issue
and what I cannot figure out!!

Does that help to narrow down the source of the problem at all??

By the way, what are SMBs?

And also, did I see that one of the reports suggests that the computer
called 'PersonalSocial' is the master server/browser? If so, that is not how
I want it, I want it to be the 'work' one. So how do I go about changing the
relative status of the computers?

Here are the 'printouts' from this computer (the 'work' one), following the
advice on your website. This is the computer that seems to have the problems
on. [Also, because i cannot get to this computer from the other two on the
network, I cannot copy and paste files from Notepad across from the others to
this one and this message.]

You alreday have background on the network set-up and this comnputer
(running Win XP Home with SP2). I believe as fas as I can tell that physical

Now, your original problem report is " ... the problem is just file-sharing

So run the reports on the other 2, put the files where you can access them from
the third, pull the files across, and post them. Because all that we know so
far is stated above.

All three computers are visible on each computer as part of the Windows

Neil,

Server Message Blocks, or SMBs, are the language that Windows Networking uses.
Their passage is essential to file sharing, to browsing ("seeing" other
computers in Network Neighbourhood), and to name resolution (if not
"Peer-Peer"). SMBs are protocol independent; they can use either IP (directly
hosted, or NetBT), NetBEUI, or IPX/SPX.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html

All computers have to use the same transport for SMBs though.

The Master Browser selection process ("election") is fascinating. Tweaking it
manually is even more so. Read about the Master Browser in general, to
understand.

Hi Chuck
Just wondering if yoiu were able to offer anything further on this in the
light of my SECOND rely to this message on 12th March 2007, date stamped at
05.48 PST?
It included the ipconfig etc details for the other two computers on the
network, as requested.

Thanks a lot - your help is genuinely appreciated.

<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

Neil,

If neither of the above 2 are any help, let's do some real analysis.

Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT
include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses).

1. Open Notepad.
2. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and

It won't run well, if it's not easily readable.
4. If the text is not easily read, then:
* Stretch the sides of the Notepad window. If this improves things,
then continue with Step 5.
* Close Notepad, as is (do not bother to save anything).
* Open Notepad.
* Under Format, reverse the setting for Word Wrap. If it is unchecked,
check it. If checked, uncheck it.

5. Verify, and correct, computer names and IP addresses if necessary.
6. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
7. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
8. Wait patiently.
9. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Hello Chuck

We have cracked it - or rather, you have.

The NetBIOS was set the same on all three compuiters - to enable NetBIOS
over TCP/IP on the WINS tab via the Properties of the TCP/IP protocol of the
connections.

But that thing about the guest account and the "restrictanonymous" registry
setting - that seems to have done the trick.
On my main ('work') computer, the value of this was set to 2 and so I
changed that to 0 (zero) and bingo, all three computers can not only see each
other on the network, thay can all share files from each other and work on
them. That's what I was trying to achieve.

By the way, what does that Reigistry setting change on a more visible
screen? I can only assume that it is nothing that can be changed by another
more visible route (e.g. in user accounts), otherwise you wouldn't be
directing us into the Registry in the first place.

Anyway, thanks an absolute million for your patience and for helping me to
resolve this annoying little problem. I am genuinely grateful for your help.
Thanks
Neil

'PersonalSocial' is the name of the other desktop PC on the network.

Hope some of that helps, it's all basiccally gobbledegook to me, I am afraid!!

Thanks a lot

Neil,

\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{4A046D02-1092-4B3C-9E0B-A65511334A54}

So far, we can see that Neil is getting SMBs from the other 2.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html

Make sure that NetBT is ENABLED on all 3 computers!

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

Neil

Hi Neil,

I sort of forgot about you - sorry about that.

OK, the one open issue. NetBT?

A second issue. You're using Guest authentication.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html

Thanks
Neil

Yay! It's restrictanonymous again!

The restrictanonymous setting, as you have guessed, has no GUI interface. It is
only set by the registry editor.

Wasn't that fun? Glad we got it sorted.
